COVID-19

In response to the global COVID-19 pandemic, in March of 2020 LHA launched a promotor-led emergency response initiative to aid the Santa Ana community during this turbulent time. The initiative allowed us to recruit, train, and equip community members to promote COVID-19 education in order to reduce the risk of transmission and have access to services such as testing and vaccination clinics. Through this effort LHA also established a bilingual COVID-19 information call center, mobile testing at schools, case management services, contact tracing, isolation and food delivery support, and cash assistance.

Testing and
Vaccination Clinics

In 2020 we began using our office space in Santa Ana to provide free COVID-19 testing and vaccines for the community. Our clinics have become a cornerstone in the city and they have allowed our community members to receive the services that they need regardless of insurance or language barriers

The clinics allowed us to share messages to Santa Ana residents about the many other services we offer at LHA and to combat misinformation about COVID-19 and vaccines.

¡Andalé! ¿Qué Esperas?

LHA partnered with AltaMed as a part of their “¡Andale! ¿Qué Esperas?” program. A multi-layered community, broadcast, and digital campaign which was able to reach over 4.45 million Latinos through a public education campaign and over 2.25 million Latinos via direct outreach. Through this partnership were able strengthen and expand our efforts to aid our community during the COVID-19 pandemic and keep our clinic
sites open.

LHA Call Center

To better reach the needs of our community and to sign up participants for our testing and vaccine clinics, LHA hired and trained a team of promotores to work in the LHA Call Center. While initially intended to aid the COVID-19 department, the Call Center has grown to be a reliable place where OC residents can call to get the help they need in either English or Spanish. Participants can call at any time from 7am - 7pm to get help on a variety of common health problems and questions such as:

  • Sign up for a COVID test

  • Find a vaccination clinic

  • Find out if they are eligible for a booster shot

  • Ask if their kids are eligible for the vaccine

  • Ask about COVID misinformation

  • Ask for rental assistance

  • And much more!

The call center can refer participants to any department within LHA, and also has partnered with other public health organizations in Orange County such as The Cambodian Family and 211 Orange County to ensure that we can meet the needs of our community.

  • Whether verbal or written information, these short one-on-one or group (in-person or virtual) interactions are intended to transmit key health messages or a brief introduction to specific community resources.

  • Promotores organize systematic door-to-door outreach in pre-identified neighborhoods and apartment complexes. They work in pairs, bring information on a given topic, and encourage householders to connect to services and programs in their area. LHA has had tremendous success using this outreach method because it effectively seeks out the individuals and families who are most marginalized, and underserved, and who may not know where to find resources or how to gain access to them. Before conducting this outreach, Promotores take a thorough inventory of services within the local communities. This allows them to provide referrals to local resources since transportation is often a barrier to accessing services for many communities in Central Orange County.

  • LHA participates in community wellness events and health fairs throughout Orange County to promote and provide health and wellness information. Our community faces numerous cultural, linguistic, and financial barriers to accessing healthcare services. LHA partners with community-based organizations, municipalities, school districts, local colleges and universities, and business districts to take health information, services, and resources into communities, especially in medically underserved regions of the county, where individuals may have limited transportation to seek out services or where there are gaps in culturally and linguistically concordant care for residents.

  • Leveraging popular education techniques that uplift creativity, resilience, and commitment of local communities to health practices, Promotores implement educational art displays, distribute culturally resonant items with health messaging, introduce a modified version of a popular song to help retain health information, deploy the LHA Infomovil with a loudspeaker playing key messaging, among other activities that successfully reach individuals with health information and information about how to access specific community resources. Creative outreach is especially effective for topics that are sensitive and historically stigmatized.

  • Mini campaigns up to three days of outreach events designed to build trust between LHA Promotores and specific neighborhoods. These are designed to provide more extensive coverage of a particular topic. Promotores will set up a booth or various booths with activities for the entire family that introduce a specific topic. The stations will have additional information and resources available in flyers and other collateral. During the campaign, LHA Promotores will actively establish conversations with individuals. By the third or fourth day, individuals approach them asking for assistance for a friend or family member and eventually revealing their own needs and circumstances. Promotores are prepared to offer additional local resources and to direct them to our various engagement services.

Thank you for supporting a healthy community.
